Course Description

Level 1 is designed for learners who are new to the Korean language or who require foundational reinforcement in preparation for the examination. The course introduces Hangul, essential vocabulary, and basic sentence structures used in common daily situations. Through guided and practical language activities, students develop beginning-level communicative skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The course aims to establish a solid foundation in Korean language use aligned with the TOPIK Level 1 proficiency standard.

Course Objectives

The program aims to:

● Read and write the Korean alphabet (Hangul) accurately.
● Use basic everyday expressions related to greetings, self-introduction, numbers, time, and locations.
● Understand and produce simple sentences in spoken and written Korean.
● Acquire TOPIK Level 1 vocabulary and grammar.

4. Approximately 75 to 90 minutes of self-contained online lectures each week, with no need for additional textbooks or external materials

6. One 3-hour live mock examination to be conducted onsite at the Enderun Coworking, Estancia

Attendance Policy

As noted, attendance is mandatory, and excuses must follow university policies. As one cannot participate when absent, students should also be aware that missing a class will impact their participation score

Academic Policy

Academic dishonesty includes but not limited to:’

● Cheating during examinations
● Obtaining and using information for assignments and examinations through fraudulent means
● False representation of others’ effort as one’s own.

Examples of academic dishonesty are copying from others during examinations, copying material from other students’ work and submitting the same as one’s own, and creating fictitious interview materials for assignments or reports.

Plagiarism

Woosong University considers plagiarism as a serious breach of professional ethics.

Plagiarism will not be tolerated in any form. Penalties can be as severe as expulsion from the university. To avoid plagiarism, do your own work or cite the work of others appropriate. Per Woosong policy and as stated in the Student Handbook:

● The first instance of plagiarism will result in a “0” for the assignment in question and a report will be filed.
● The second instance of plagiarism will result in a failing grade for the entire course.
● The third instance will result in administrative action, which could include expulsion from the school.
● The instructor will report each instance of any violation of policy and rules to the disciplinary officer.

Program Duration

Week 1 Principles of Hangul / Sentence Structure/ Consonants & Vowels 1
Introduction to the Korean writing system (Hangul), including its scientific design and basic structure. Learners will study foundational consonants and vowels and begin forming simple syllables. Basic Korean sentence structure (Subject–Object–Verb) will also be introduced.
Week 2 Consonants & Vowels 2,3,4
Continuation of Hangul mastery focusing on double consonants, compound vowels, and pronunciation rules. Students will practice reading and writing more complex syllable blocks and improve decoding skills through guided exercises.
Week 3 Greetings & Introductions 1
Learners will acquire essential expressions for greetings and polite interactions. Focus includes basic self-introduction, honorifics, and understanding levels of formality in Korean communication.
Week 4 Greetings & Introductions 2
Expansion of conversational skills for introductions, including asking and answering questions about name, nationality, and occupation. Emphasis on sentence patterns and real-life dialogue practice.
Week 5 Objects 1
Introduction to common everyday objects and basic vocabulary building. Learners will practice identifying and naming items, using simple sentence structures such as “This is…” and “That is…”.
Week 6 Objects 2
Development of object-related expressions including possession (“I have…”) and location of objects. Learners will also be introduced to particles and their functions in sentences.
Week 7 Schedule 1
Introduction to numbers, days, and time expressions. Learners will begin discussing simple schedules and daily routines using basic verbs.
Week 8 Midterm Exam
Assessment of learners’ progress covering Hangul reading and writing, basic grammar, vocabulary, and introductory conversational skills.
Week 9 Schedule 2
Continuation of schedule-related language focusing on constructing more detailed sentences about routines, appointments, and frequency.
Week 10 Location & Price 1
Introduction to place-related vocabulary and basic location markers (e.g., here, there). Learners will begin asking and answering simple questions about places and prices.
Week 11 Location & Price 2
Expansion of transactional language including buying items, asking for prices, and understanding numbers in context. Includes role-play activities for real-life situations (e.g., shopping).
Week 12 Weekend Activities 1
Introduction to common leisure activities and verbs. Learners will describe simple plans and preferences for weekends using basic sentence structures.
Week 13 Weekend Activities 2
Further development of conversational fluency by discussing past and future activities. Learners will practice expressing likes, dislikes, and making simple plans.
Week 14 Comprehensive Review
Structured review of all course content including Hangul, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking skills. Focus on integration and fluency through interactive activities and practice tasks.
Week 15 Final Exam
Final assessment evaluating learners’ overall proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and basic conversational Korean.

Program Faculty

Jungsup Kim

Professor Jungsup Kim is widely regarded as one of Korea’s foremost experts in Korean language education, with over three decades of distinguished experience in scholarship, academic leadership, and international engagement. He previously served as Director of the International Education Institute at Kyung Hee University and as President of the International Association for Korean Language Education (IAKLE). As principal researcher for the International Standard Curriculum for Korean, he helped shape the global standards that continue to guide Korean language education worldwide.

His contributions have been recognized by the Korean government through the Order of Education Service (Jade Class) and several ministerial citations. Professor Kim continues to play an influential role in Korean language diplomacy and cultural exchange as Professor Emeritus at Kyung Hee University and currently leads the iDegree Korean Language Program at Woosong University.
