Beyond Illumination: Intensive Lighting Design Workshop for the Built Environment

Experience lighting design through an engaging and interactive session, focusing on key aspects of illuminating spaces within time constraints. Activities will provide a hands-on experience, promoting individual and collaborative problem-solving skills and immediate application of the concepts learned.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

1. Lighting Fundamentals:

  • Define key lighting terms and concepts
  • Identify fundamental principles of light behavior and its interaction with architectural elements

2. Specification Exploration:

  • Collaborative design challenge integrating lighting concepts and fixture specifications into a given architectural scenario

3. Group Presentation:

  • Short presentations on charette/activity outcomes, showcasing teamwork and applied knowledge

Instructor’s Profile

Ar. Nikki Escalona-Tayag
Ar. Nikki Tayag blends extensive experience in architecture and design into her academic leadership. Prior to her role in academia, she established herself as an Architect, with a focus on lighting design for the built environment.

Starting her career in 2008 as a Designer and Project Manager, she worked on diverse projects across residential, commercial, institutional, and hospitality sectors. In 2011, she took a transformative step by pursuing an MFA in Lighting Design at Parsons, The New School for Design in New York, USA. Returning to the Philippines, she integrated her experience in architecture into the emerging field of architectural lighting— a discipline still considered pioneering in the local context. As the founder of 33rd & 3rd Architectural Lighting Design in Manila, she has played a crucial role in shaping innovative design solutions.

She collaborates with various industry professionals, including architects, interior designers, product designers, landscape architects, and engineers. Navigating the nuanced realms of design, she brings a rich and holistic perspective to the academe.

Her local and international experience, coupled with a commitment to fostering excellence in education, reflects a dedication to providing students at Enderun Colleges with profound insights into the dynamic intersection of these interconnected disciplines.
